Approach

We have developed a variety of soundscape management, analysis, recording and playback tools for both researchers, educators and citizen scientists. Many of these tools are based on existing tools developed elsewhere (e.g., seeWave R tool) or have been “homebrewed” here at CGS.

Named after the species name for the strawberry poison-dart frog, our Pumilio tool aids researchers in (1) loading soundscape recordings from the field into a database; (2) creates mp3 and spectrograms of each recording; (3) updates metadata files that summarize number of recordings per site and (4) associate other important data, like lat-long, to other generic tools like GoogleMap. A web based interface allows any user to query large databases, and then view thumbnails of spectrogram or waveforms of the soundscape recording. An interactive player allows users to also listen to the recording and move through the sound recording interactively. A separate interface is also available for database managers.

This tool allows users to extract a subset of files from a soundscape library and then create a file that can be used to process hundreds to millions of soundscape recordings for use in Sound R.
